Gaining indulgences for the faithful departed Nov. 1-8

As we commemorate the Faithful Departed throughout the month of November, Holy Church offers us the gift of gaining a Plenary Indulgence for ourselves and our beloved dead who are in great need of our prayers. The Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary, in its “Enchiridion Indulgentiarum” (“Handbook of Indulgences”), states that the faithful can obtain a plenary indulgence for the faithful departed “every day, from the 1st to the 8th of November,” if, in addition to fulfilling the normal terms of a plenary indulgence, one “devoutly visit[s] a cemetery and at least mentally pray[s] for the dead.”

Normal Terms:

  1. Set your intention. Offer the plenary indulgence for a soul in Purgatory, including the most forgotten soul.
  2. Pray for the Pope’s intentions. Pray one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be.
  3. Go to confession. Receive Sacramental Confession within 20 days before or after today. Monthly confession can fulfill this requirement.
  4. Be in a state of grace. Remain free from mortal sin.
  5. Detach from all sin. Have a sincere interior rejection of all attachment to sin, even venial sin. This doesn’t mean promising never to sin again, but genuinely renouncing sin in your heart.
  6. Receive Holy Communion. Receive the Eucharist on the day you seek the indulgence (midnight to midnight, not sundown to sundown).

Al conmemorar a los Fieles Difuntos durante todo el mes de noviembre, la Santa Iglesia nos ofrece el don de ganar una Indulgencia Plenaria para nosotros mismos y para nuestros seres queridos difuntos que están en gran necesidad de nuestras oraciones.
