Embracing Silence and Allowing God to Speak to Our Hearts
July 4 2026
DAY 1: WE HAVE ARRIVED!
Greetings from Guatemala!
As I’m writing this, all 15 of us missionaries are packed into a small bus on our way to Santa Cruz del Quiché. We still have about four hours to go, and although we’re tired and a little restless after such an early morning, our hearts are so full.
After months of meetings, planning, praying, and preparing, it still feels a little surreal that we’re finally here. By the grace of God, everything went smoothly, and we landed safely in Guatemala City around noon. Thank you to everyone who has been praying for us. Knowing that so many people back home are thinking of us means more than you know.
One of my favorite moments today happened prior to our departure. Father Tom called us just to pray over our team. It was such a thoughtful surprise. It reminded me that even though we’re miles away from home, we’re not doing this alone. We carry the prayers of our parish, our families, and our friends with us.
When we arrived, Radio María welcomed us with Pollo Campero and a little bag of Guatemalan candy for each of us. It was such a sweet and thoughtful welcome.
Right now, I’m looking out the bus window, and honestly… I don’t really want to close my eyes because I feel like I’ll miss something beautiful. This is my first time in Guatemala and my first mission. The road to Santa Cruz del Quiché is captivating. We’ve passed green mountains, farmland, people selling chocobananas and snacks along the roadside, etc. It’s just beautiful.
The bus has been full of laughter, conversations, naps, and singing. We’ve sung “Señor Sol” and of course, “Alma Misionera.”
Every hour that passes brings us closer to meeting our brothers and sisters in Christ, and our excitement continues to grow.
Deacon Robert and Father David have reminded us throughout this journey to simply be present. Sometimes that means embracing silence and allowing God to speak to our hearts. Even though many of the people we will meet speak K’iche’, Spanish, or another Mayan language, we’re reminded that love doesn’t need perfect words. The love of Christ speaks every language.
As I sit here watching the mountains pass by, my heart is overflowing with joy knowing that the day we’ve waited for has finally arrived. I can’t wait to discover what God has in store for each of us this week.
Tomorrow will be a big day as we begin preparing for the young adult retreat at our sister parish Sagrado Corazón de Jesus. Please continue keeping us in your prayers.
Happy 4th of July !
With peace and love from Guatemala.
